National Association of Home Builders

National Association of Home Builders Designation Courses

A NAHB Designation says a lot about you. Professional designations offer excellent opportunities to improve your skills, advance your career and be recognized for your commitment to professional growth. NAHB has the most targeted curriculum, accomplished teachers and widely respected education opportunities in the business. The Builders Association of Southern Oregon hosts designation courses; check the events calendar or contact the BASO education coordinator: [email protected] for information on upcoming courses. For more information about NAHB Education & Events, click here.

Why Earn a Designation?

Earning an NAHB professional designation can improve your bottom line, according to an NAHB Builder Member Census. The study reveals that members with designations make more money than their counterparts without them. According to the survey, members holding:

  • The Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation had company revenues that averaged $1.61 million more last year than those without an NAHB builder designation.
  • The Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) designation had company revenues that averaged $990,189 more.
  • The Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation had company revenues that averaged $824,124 more.
  • The Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation had company revenues that averaged $506,414 more.
  • The Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation had company revenues that averaged $110,838 more.

(Figures are based on the median 2012 revenue in the NAHB 2012 Builder Member Census.)

Which Designation is Right for You?

Continue to grow in your professional endeavors. Whether you’re looking to advance in your career or gain additional knowledge about a particular topic, NAHB Education offers a wide-range of learning options. Along with exclusive course and designation sponsor, Lowe’s ProServices, NAHB is committed to providing the best residential home building knowledge to foster success in the industry.

Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS)

The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place.

The baby boom generation has many choices as this large population of potential clients for remodelers, builders, contractors and occupational therapists considers where to live – but overwhelmingly, seniors would prefer to stay in their own homes. The CAPS designation offers your potential clients what they need most: reassurance that you’ll help them make the choices that will help them stay in their homes safely and securely.

In addition, the CAPS designation helps you make your clients’ homes more “visitable.” Even if the home owners don’t think they need additional task lighting, grab bars, and other home modifications for their own use, their family members and visitors might. CAPS helps you help your clients make the right choices, and it gives you more security in remodeling market niche that’s continuing to grow in popularity.

Certified Graduate Associate (CGA)

NAHB places great emphasis on doing business with a member: Builders and remodelers are encouraged to work with contractors and suppliers who share their commitment to the home building industry and to their home building association.

NAHB Associate members are those professionals who work in the home building and remodeling industry but in supporting roles: the bankers, lumber dealers, engineers, real estate agents and others who make the materials and provide the services that make home building possible.

Associate members who wish to set themselves apart from their peers often go for their Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) designation.

The CGA curriculum helps these professionals gain a better understanding of the industry they serve from the best source possible: builders and remodelers with years of field experience. The CGA designation affirms your level of industry knowledge and your commitment to your professionalism in the building industry.

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)

Experienced builders can be even better with the Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) educational designation. You\’ll sharpen your business management skills and better understand today\’s home building industry. CGB courses focus on effective management in the office and on the job site, examine all stages of new home construction and cover topics such as scheduling, estimating, job cost procedures, accounting principles and basic contract law.

When NAHB surveyed CGB designation holders, the association found that their revenues were significantly higher than companies of the same size but without CGB leadership at the helm. That’s because the home builders who seek the CGB are dedicated to their craft and to growing their business – and that is evident by their commitment to continuing education.

Are you ready to get started? First, you’ll need to take the Builder Assessment Review so NAHB can tailor an educational program that capitalizes on your strengths. But don’t wait too long to get started: Enjoy the benefits of the CGB as soon as you can!

Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR)

Remodelers with at least five years of experience in the industry can apply for the Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) educational designation. Courses in the CGR curriculum are designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a successful remodeling operation.

More and more remodelers are discovering the advantages of CGR and the marketing advantages it brings as clients recognize the “CGR initials” as the mark of professionalism in their remodeling contractor.

The CGR curriculum helps you run your business more efficiently by teaching job cost procedures, accounting principles and basic contract law. Other topics covered include design, estimating and scheduling – but depend on the results of the Professional Remodeler Experience Profile, which CGR candidates complete before assembling a curriculum.

Certified Green Professional (CGP)

and other industry professionals who incorporate green and sustainable building principles into homes— without driving up the cost of construction. The required courses provide a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach consumers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.

CGP coursework is closely aligned with the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard, which includes chapters on energy, water and resource efficiency, indoor environmental quality, lot and site development and home owner education and is the core curriculum for the required CGP classes.

There are nearly 3,000 active CGPs in the United States working in all aspects of the high-performance home building and remodeling industry, from contractors and their subs to real estate agents and appraisal experts. Join them today.

Certified New Home Marketing Professional (CMP)

As the home building industry rebounds, builders and developers are looking for qualified salespeople. The Certified New Home Marketing Professional (CMP) is a mid-level designation that will help you manage the sales and marketing function of a new home community and boost your career.

The CMP designation tells home builders that you’re knowledgeable about new home construction and the advantages of a newly built home so you can present the best case to potential home buyers. You understand how consumers shop today and you’re ready to employ every marketing advantage in your arsenal.

Give yourself the sales edge with the CMP and watch your new home sales career take off.

Certified New Home Sales Professional (CSP)

Master the craft of successful selling and launch your new home sales career with the Certified New Home Sales Professional (CSP) educational designation.

Taking the required classes in person or online, you’ll gain a broad understanding of the home building industry, better understand today\’s consumers and learn tried-and-true techniques used by real estate veterans for greeting prospects, overcoming objections and closing the sale.

The CSP designation is also your introduction to the Institute of Residential Marketing, which awards a series of four sales and marketing designations for professionals at all stages of their careers.

Graduate Master Builder (GMB)

The ultimate symbol of the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, you must have the CGB designation or the CGR designation with five years of building experience, or 10 years of building experience and successful completion of three CGB/CGR courses.

GMB courses require additional study, with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals. It’s a significant time commitment, but graduates gain a more complete knowledge of all facets of the home building industry, build a new network of peers across the country, and inform their potential clients of their commitment to the best of home building, customer service and advanced construction techniques.

Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR)

The Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) professional designation is held by a select group of building industry professionals: applicants must have at least 15 years of remodeling experience before they are even eligible to be considered for the designation.

This program is designed to be the master level of the current Certified Graduate Remodeler designation and requires completion of five additional courses, and having an active CGR for five years or active CR (Certified Remodeler) from NARI (National Association Remodeling Industry) for 10 years.

Home owners seek GMRs because they know that these are remodelers who know how to run a successful business, keep up with current design and style trends and listen well to their clients.

Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP)

Please read: Importance Notice for All Active and Inactive HCCPs Regarding Designation Renewals

The Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) is a specialized designation for developers, property managers, asset managers and others working in the affordable housing industry through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program.

Successful HCCPs understand how the LIHTC program provides safe, decent and affordable rental housing for so many American families. Property owners and developers turn to HCCP professionals when they need a more thorough understanding of the complex net of LIHTC regulations that keeps owners and managers in compliance.

To support this one-of-a-kind designation, NAHB publishes a newsletter, the Credential and regularly hosts continuing education events, including webinars on tax law and successful apartment business management.

Master Certified New Home Sales Professional (Master CSP)

The Master CSP designation acknowledges the continued educational achievements of graduates of the CSP program. Curriculum and requirements.

Master Certified Green Professional (Master CGP)

As green and high-performance construction turns to the mainstream, experienced green industry professionals seek an educational designation that signifies their long-standing commitment to and experience with sustainable building and remodeling. They find it with the Master Certified Green Professional (Master CGP) designation.

More than theory, this designation includes a series of hands-on curriculum requirements as well as significant experience in the field. Classes are held with the support and cooperation of Green Building Advisor, the leading green web publication in the field. The emphasis is on building science: a core competency in a field that changes almost daily as new products and techniques are introduced.

Like the Certified Green Professional course, the Master CGP classes are closely aligned with the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard, which includes chapters on energy, water and resource efficiency, indoor environmental quality, lot and site development and home owner education.

Master in Residential Marketing (MIRM)

The Master in Residential Marketing (MIRM) represents the pinnacle of new home sales education because it represents years of industry experience, serious coursework requirements and a one-of-a-kind requirement for a successful case study to complete the designation.

That means that there are not a lot of MIRM designees in the market, but those who are, are the leaders in their field

The MIRM designation is the fourth from the Institute of Residential Marketing. MIRMs who have held the designation for at least 10 years may also be eligible for MIRM Emeritus status, recognition of their knowledge, wisdom and long experience. If you know someone who may be eligible, please download the MIRM Emeritus application.
